The Usual Suspects: A Neo-Noir Mystery Film with a Twist

The Usual Suspects is a 1995 film directed by Bryan Singer and written by Christopher McQuarrie. It stars Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Chazz Palminteri, Stephen Baldwin, Benicio del Toro, Kevin Pollak, and Pete Postlethwaite. The film is a neo-noir mystery that follows the interrogation of Roger "Verbal" Kint (Spacey), a small-time con man who is one of only two survivors of a massacre and fire on a ship docked at the Port of Los Angeles. Through flashback and narration, Kint tells an interrogator (Palminteri) a convoluted story of events that led him and his criminal companions to the boat, and of a mysterious crime lord known as Keyser SÃze who controlled them.

The film was shot on a $6 million budget and began as a title taken from a column in Spy magazine called The Usual Suspects, after one of Claude Rains' most memorable lines in the classic film Casablanca. Singer thought that it would make a good title for a film. The film was shown out of competition at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival and then initially released in a few theaters. It received favorable reviews and was eventually given a wider release. The praise was towards the mystery elements, the screenplay, the plot twist and Spacey's performance. McQuarrie won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and Spacey won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. The Writers Guild of America ranked the film as having the 35th greatest screenplay of all time.

The film's plot is complex and nonlinear, with multiple flashbacks and unreliable narration. The film begins with a scene of a dying Dean Keaton (Byrne) being shot by a mysterious figure on a burning ship. The film then cuts to the interrogation of Verbal Kint, who is granted immunity in exchange for his testimony. Kint tells the story of how he and four other criminals - Keaton, Michael McManus (Baldwin), Fred Fenster (del Toro), and Todd Hockney (Pollak) - were brought together by the police in a lineup for a truck hijacking. They decide to work together for a robbery orchestrated by McManus, which leads them to meet a lawyer named Kobayashi (Postlethwaite), who claims to work for the elusive Keyser SÃze. Kobayashi tells them that they owe SÃze a debt for their past crimes and that they must perform a dangerous mission for him: to destroy a shipment of cocaine on a ship owned by SÃze's rivals.

Kint's story is interspersed with scenes of Kujan's investigation, who is skeptical of Kint's account and believes that Keaton is actually SÃze. Kujan tries to convince Kint that he is being manipulated by Keaton and that he should cooperate with him. Kint insists that he is telling the truth and that SÃze is a real person, a ruthless and mysterious mastermind who has killed anyone who has seen his face or knows his identity. Kint describes SÃze as a Turkish criminal who became infamous after killing his own family and rivals when they were held hostage by Hungarian mobsters. Kint also claims that SÃze has a personal vendetta against Keaton, who once stole from him.

The film's climax reveals that Kint's story is mostly fabricated, using details from the office where he was interrogated and from a bulletin board behind Kujan. Kint is actually SÃze himself, who orchestrated the whole plot to eliminate his enemies and witnesses. He also manipulated Keaton into joining the mission, knowing that he would be killed by the Hungarian mobster Kovash, who was the only person who could identify SÃze. Kint leaves the office with his immunity papers and walks away, dropping his limp and changing his accent. Kujan realizes too late that he has been fooled and chases after Kint, but he has already disappeared. The film ends with Kint's voice-over saying "And like that... he is gone."
