How to Install the Roland TR-8 7x7 Expansion Pack

If you own a Roland TR-8 Rhythm Performer, you might be interested in adding more sounds and features to your drum machine. What is the 7x7 Expansion Pack?

The 7x7 Expansion Pack is a software update for the TR-8 that adds 30 new sounds and features to your drum machine. The sounds are faithfully reproduced from the original PCM wave data and detailed models of the circuitry of the TR-707 and TR-727, two iconic drum machines from the mid-1980s that were widely used in synth pop, acid house, techno, industrial, electro, and experimental music.

The 7x7 Expansion Pack also adds four new sounds: a modified TR-909 kick, a TR-909 snare, and a clap and snap sound. These sounds can be mixed and matched with the existing TR-8 sounds to create new combinations and variations. Additionally, the 7x7 Expansion Pack adds the unique flam and accent behaviors of the TR-909 and TR-707, which allow you to add more groove and expression to your patterns. You can adjust the flam intensity and choose between two levels of accent for each sound.

With the 7x7 Expansion Pack installed, your TR-8 becomes a powerful drum machine that can emulate four legendary Roland drum machines: the TR-808, TR-909, TR-707, and TR-727. You can also create your own custom kits using any combination of sounds from these four machines.

How to Download and Install the 7x7 Expansion Pack?

To download and install the 7x7 Expansion Pack on your TR-8, you will need to follow these steps:

1. Go to the Roland website (www.roland.com) and register with your email and password.


2. Download the TR-8 driver and install it on your computer.


3. Download the latest TR-8 firmware (version 1.20 or higher) and install it on your TR-8.


4. Download the 7x7 Expansion Pack file (rolandtr87x7expansionspackzip) from the Roland website or from an authorized dealer.


5. Unzip the file and open the folder that contains the installation guide (PDF) and the expansion pack file (BIN).


6. Connect your TR-8 to your computer via USB cable.


7. Turn on your TR-8 while holding down PTN SELECT [1] button. The display will show "UPdt".


8. Drag and drop the expansion pack file (BIN) onto the "TR-8" icon on your computer.


9. Wait until the transfer is complete. The display will show "End".


10. Turn off your TR-8 and disconnect it from your computer.


11. Turn on your TR-8 again. The display will show "707" or "727" depending on which kit you selected last.

How to Use the 7x7 Expansion Pack?

To use the 7x7 Expansion Pack on your TR-8, you will need to know how to select kits, assign sounds, adjust parameters, and use flam and accent. Here are some tips:
