Julio Caro Baroja (1914-1995) was one of the most prominent and influential Spanish anthropologists of the 20th century. He was also a historian, linguist, folklorist and writer. He belonged to a distinguished family of intellectuals and artists, such as his uncle, the painter Pablo Picasso, his brother, the writer PÃo Baroja, and his nephew, the filmmaker Carlos Saura.
Caro Baroja studied history and philology at the University of Madrid and later at Oxford. He was influenced by the British school of social anthropology, especially by Bronislaw Malinowski and Edward Evans-Pritchard. He conducted fieldwork in various regions of Spain, as well as in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and the Sahara. He wrote more than 50 books and hundreds of articles on topics such as Basque culture, Spanish folklore, witchcraft, gypsies, Berbers and Saharans.
He was also a professor at several universities and a member of various academic institutions. He received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to anthropology and culture. He died in 1995 in his home in Bera (Navarre).
Estudios Saharianos (Saharan Studies) is considered one of Caro Baroja's masterpieces and one of the most comprehensive works ever written on the Sahara. It was commissioned by the Spanish government as part of a series of preliminary ethnological studies on the Spanish colonies in Africa. Caro Baroja accepted the task with some hesitation, as he had never been to the Sahara before and had little time to prepare. He spent about six months in the field between 1952 and 1953, traveling across the desert with a caravan of camels and trucks.
